Most weather services rely on sensors and satellite imagery to provide a picture of outdoor conditions. However, because data is collected from somewhat distant points, such providers often don’t accurately depict the situation just outside one’s door. New app Sunshine leverages users’ reports of the weather in their precise location, based on the positions of their phones, as well as barometric sensors embedded in their devices. Combined with predictive algorithms, these “Nowcasts” provide highly accurate, hyper-local 18-hour forecasts. To encourage users to submit reports, the app includes a gamification element through which users can level up and earn points for giving their account of the weather.
