Retro Refrigerators

Gizmodo: If your crib is getting to be a little bit too modern-looking, now it’s time to funk it up a bit with some retro-refrigeration. Oddly-named Brit company Smeg is offering these old-fashioned refrigerators with a large selection of colors including those seen above. So if you’re looking to sing the praises of the Union Jack or want a refrigerator to match that pink Razr you just picked up, perhaps you’ve just found something that’s chillin’ enough.

  1. One challenge that Smeg might face is that, for all their coolness, old-fashioned refrigerators don’t conform to modern safety standards. I’m sure that the Smeg models do meet those standards (using magnets instead of mechanical latches, for instance, so a child trapped inside can push his way out), and that they’re “retro” in appearance only. It sounds obvious, but a misperception on the part of consumers can cripple sales.

  2. Additionally it is illegal in the US to sell refrigerators that do not meet the Refrigeration Safety Act of 1956 as administered by the consumer safety Act. Also as of November 12 there must be a certificate that accompanies the refrigerator for distribution in th eUS.
