Bicycle Shopping Basket

basket-bike.jpgTrendCentral: More people are passing up car trips for bike rides to do errands, but there's only so much a messenger bag can hold. Speaking to this growing eco-conscious lifestyle trend, this stylish bicycle basket doubles as a shopping basket. As bikes have become the must-have accessory of the moment, especially in urban centers, this basket, with a design reminiscent of a vintage Swedish crochet tablecloth, is a particularly fashionable add-on. We expect bike accessories to increasingly show up in high-end design arenas.

TrendBlog: Nike has launched a large-scale pan-European mobile marketing campaign in which it unveils a customization service called Nike PhotoID, which invites Nike fans to submit their randomly cellphone-taken pictures with brilliant colors to the company. The service will then analyze and withdraw from the pictures two dominant colors, make customized sneaker designs and send pictures of the designs back to the photographers, who can choose either to keep them as wall paper or order the personalized shoes.

Picnic Printer!

canon-cp770-photo.jpg

Popgadget: This portable photo printer looks like a Sanrio lunch bucket for kids, which is perfect actually, as it gives off the impression of something light and easy to carry (which it is). The compact Canon SELPHY CP770 photo printer is one of the newer additions to Canon's SELPHY line of compact photo printers, and seems made for that person who is just so impatient to print photos that he/she must print while the party is still going on.

The actual printer is the top part of the bucket; the basket space is used to store your paper and other supplies. Comes with an A/C cable, but with an optional Canon battery pack, you can take this anywhere. When you're ready to print, you can either insert your camera's memory card into one of the slots on the printer, or print wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled camera phone. Maximum paper size is 4x8. Big buttons, large display for previewing your photos (2.5" TFT display), and automatic red-eye correction make this very user-friendly, even for grandma.

Have a Social Jam-Session with the Drum Table

drum%20table.JPG

Banging away on a musical table might just be the way to enhance your social life. The Rumba Series created by 'Musical Furnishings' allows you to design your own drum table with "interchangeable and rearrangeable percussion inserts" so that you can have a musical bash with a bunch of people sitting around a table.

Musical Furnishings is definitely on to something-perhaps an innovative type of group therapy or simply a spicy new way to connect with your family and friends. A refreshing alternative to petty chatter and small-talk, it can also help you develop some rythm skills. Which is why I can clearly see drum-table jam sessions becoming the next social trend. Bye Bye Scrabble?

Get Hand-Tailored Suits Online

indochino.jpg

Indochino.com sells tailor-made men's suits over the internet. After successfully seeking out financing and tailoring partners, co-founders Kyle Vucko and Heikal Gani set to work on building Indochino: the world's first online service for hand-tailored men's suits.

Here's how the process work: once a customer submits the measurements and order with Indochino.com, the order is received and reviewed with the tailors and standard size charts.

The fabric is then cut and the tailor takes it back to his workshop where he will make a chalk outline based on your measurements, cut out, and then assemble your suit. It can take up to 8 hours to make one suit. The suit goes back to Indochino.com where they receive the suit, inspect it closely, and then package it for shipping worldwide. The whole process from order to arrival is within two weeks but the company is currently averaging about 9 days.

The UnoMoto Electric Commuter Device

unomoto.jpg

An 18 year old prodigy from Guelph, Ontario has built what can only be described as a two-wheeled unicycle. I know it doesn’t make much sense, but when you take a look at this innovative bike you’ll scratch your head too.

The bike incorporates a Yamaha R1 frame, side by side wheels and a Segway like gyroscopic technology. In 2006, after a visit to China, 18 year old Ben Gulak was inspired to build a bike that would contribute to a cleaner future by building an innovative electric commuter device.

Riding the UnoMoto is very simple. The on/off switch is the only electronic control, and once it’s up and balancing, you simply lean forward to accelerate, lean back to brake, and lean sideways to get one wheel turning a little faster than the other, which effectively steers the contraption. At top speed the UnoMoto will do about 25mph, and Gulak says its battery range is around 2.5 hours in normal use. When you switch it off, it rests back on its footpegs.

Start Where You Are

startwhereyouare.jpg
Times Argus: Barcomb's eighth-grade classmates at Barre Town Middle and Elementary School have been discussing career ideas, everything from nursing to playing professional basketball to flying a jet. Guidance counselor Ry Hoffman has held class with the eighth-grade students for an hour each week this semester. They talk about the transition to high school, their career interests and courses at Spaulding High School that can help them achieve their goals.

This year, Hoffman has been working with Hannah Hurlburt from the Vermont Student Assistance Corp., using a new program called Start Where You Are. The program is designed to increase the "aspiration rate" for potential first-generation college students – 8th- to 10th-graders who have not been thinking about pursuing training beyond high school, and who are important for filling Vermont's future job needs.

"We're finding that earlier and earlier students are closing doors on themselves in terms of what they want to do," Hurlburt explained. VSAC's 2005 survey of high school seniors revealed that 43 percent of male students had decided in their sophomore year or earlier not to continue their education.

The career awareness program's most notable features are its interactive Web site, with funny, Vermont-y graphics accompanied by quacking, mooing and lapping of waves, and Hurlburt, a.k.a. the "opportunista."

The Web site carries on a "virtual dialogue" with students, asking them questions that help them identify what they like to do and what they're good at. Hoffman says his students play around with the Web site because they find it "user-friendly" and "cool."

Recycled Paper Lamps

paper%20lamps.jpg

Inhabitat: Paper is a marvelous material with a complex character - at times a vessel for banal documents and stale legalese, it is also capable of much more expressive forms with a bit of creativity. Case in point: these gorgeous recycled paper lamps recently released by Jordy Fu. Her cloud-sheathed creations break free from the two dimensional realm with dreamlike textures and elaborately layered wisps.

True to their flexible medium, each lamp flat-packs to ship, and Jordy includes an energy-efficient soft white lightbulb. They come in a variety of sizes ranging from bedside table lamps to floor and pendant lights, run £90-£250 and are currently available through Jordy’ Fu’s website.

From Crowd-Sourced Ideas to a Crowd-Owned, Crowd-Managed Business Entity

gogme-community.jpg

Ideas are the basis of potential business opportunities. Good ideas do not necessarily represent good opportunity. However, you never really know the true potential of a good idea until you take action and implement it. A good business idea that is not implemented will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupies. If for any reasons, you are unable to implement your ideas, why not submit your business ideas to an online community and have it executed collectively by a community of aspiring entrepreneurs from all around the world?

Gogme.biz, which stands for Globally Owned Globally Managed Enterprise, administers a pro-business online community formed by aspiring entrepreneurs and subsequently facilitates entrepreneurs to collectively own and manage a business entity over the internet. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to contribute their business ideas. The best business ideas selected through internet voting will be implemented through the online community. The online community makes collective decisions on business planning, marketing and other business activities through internet polls and forums. Real life business staff will follow and carry out these decisions. Through business blogs and twitters, the operation manager will update daily business activities and challenges faced. Business mentors are invited to give advice so that entrepreneurs can make the best decisions. Progressively, entrepreneurs will know how their collective decisions shaped the businesses!

Anyone can contribute a low startup capital of US$100 to become a co-owner of a business entity that owns multiple internet and brick-and-mortar businesses and collectively managed by an online community. Learn to be an entrepreneur with the community through a combination of legal ownership, online participation, implementation of business ideas, social networking, decision-making, interacting with business mentors, managing businesses via a business excellence framework and getting explicit business knowledge of various industries.

Most crowd-sourced and crowd-funded projects does not sufficiently reward participants and to some extent promote mass mediocrity. With Gogme, 100% of the net profits derived from the businesses created by the online community will be shared by the entrepreneurs. The Gogme Points System rewards entrepreneurs with points for submitting business ideas, referring friends, participating in online discussions, internet polls and other online activities. Points can be use to bid for business takeovers and franchises at reasonable rates. You have a higher chance to win in the bidding if the business takeovers or franchises were formed by the implementation of your idea. As such, an idea contributed by you, implemented by the online community, eventually comes back to you as a sustainable and profitable business for takeover or franchise!

Curtains That Do More Than Keep Out Light

softpv2.jpg

Architect Sheila Kennedy of KVA Matx, an innovative architectural firm, specializes in the integration of solar-cell technology in architecture. Her team has recently designed the soft house, "a structure that can create close to 16,000 watt-hours of electricity by transforming household curtains into flexible, semi-transparent, solar collectors."

With recent advances in solar technology and the implementation photovoltaic cells in textiles this idea may not be that far off. I wouldn't get too excited however. The cost of implementing such a technology right now is pretty discouraging. Unless of course money is no object.

Coffee Carrier Bag

coffee%20carrier.jpg

If you're stepping out to grab a coffee, decency requires you ask your co-workers if anyone else wants one. But on the way back to the office, you curse your own decency as you juggle multiple hot cups and the phone rings or you need to pull out your keys.

Here's a smart solution: A nifty solution is this carry-bag for coffees!

An elegant way to carry coffee and the carrier could be reused over and over again. Definitely a hit for coffee addicts and maybe our environmentalists as well!

Kung Fu Shoes

kungfushoes.jpgTrendCentral: These simple canvas sneakers have been popular in China since the '20s and have recently gained a small, cultish following Stateside. The shoes' durability, comfort and flexible soles made them the choice footwear for Shaolin monks who wore them when practicing Kung Fu and Tai Chi. While they are still worn by martial artists, it's their simple, classic style - akin to American mainstays such as Converse All Stars and Keds - that resonates with fashionistas (both male and female) today.

iReporting

Guardian: If you fancy being a journalist, there has never been a better time – provided you don't mind giving your services for free.

Dozens of websites now want you to report for them, especially if you have been involved in an earthquake or flood, or been on site during a campus massacre. Train and helicopter crashes, forest fires, robberies and countless other events can at least make local news.

Among these websites is CNN's iReport. All you have to do is upload your story, photo or video. Last month, CNN featured 915 user reports drawn from more than 10,000 submissions. Both numbers are expected to grow. What's often called "user-generated news" is mainly the result of the mobile phone revolution. People have always been around newsworthy events, but only now do they have the means to report them to hand – literally.

Preserving Old Memories

scan%20digital%20story.jpg

ScanDigital began with a simple question from mother of one of our founders. It was the 2006 holiday season and Mike Mothner was at home opening presents with his family. This year the gift that was the biggest hit was the digital camera Mike gave his mother. The wrapping paper hadn't even hit the floor before she was busy lining the Mothner family up for picture after picture. Mike's mom was thrilled at just how easy her new digital camera was to use, and by the time she had downloaded all her photos on to the computer she was hooked. Mike's mom had officially gone digital. Later that night as the family sat down for dinner, a thought occurred to Mrs. Mothner. She turned to Mike and simply asked, "so how do I put all the photos in the garage on my computer?"

Little did she know it, but with that innocent question she planted the seed that would become ScanDigital, Mike started searching the internet for a company that would provide quality digitization services for a fair price. Mike knew he didn't want to send his mom's photo out of the country, but was unable to find a stateside company that could deliver the level of service he wanted for a reasonable price. The more Mike looked into it, the more he started thinking that there must be plenty of moms, dads and countless others who were also facing the dilemma of what to do with their old photos, slides and negatives.

Getting ScanDigital up and running was no easy feat. The hours were long and work was hard, but both Mike and Anderson knew they were creating a truly unique service. Within three months, they had developed a business plan and hired programmers to build the web site and general infrastructure.

Today, ScanDigital is the premier photo digitization service. Its industry leading innovations have created the most user-friendly process available. Combining tremendous value with an impeccable service, ScanDigital is poised to lead the digital conversion revolution.

scan%20digital2.jpg

ScanDigital allows customers to effortlessly preserve, organize, and enjoy their old memories again. Especially with news of disaster, it has become a huge trend to preserve and backup this irreplaceable memorabilia.

Photo Phone

photophone.jpg

Crave: Ah, the elusive video phone. We've been hearing about that miraculous invention since we were kids, seeing prototypes displayed at Disneyland's house of the future. But despite an occasional product on the market, visual telephony has yet to take off for the masses.

So the closest thing we may be able to get is something like the new "GE PhotoPhone," first seen at CES in January. Although it doesn't stream video, the device does at least display digital images of whomever is ringing based on a visual form of caller ID. And when no one is on the phone, it still serves as a 7-inch picture frame in either black or silver finish.

Instant BBQ

BBQ.jpegTrendHunter: Tons of lighter fluid is used to light BBQs in the US every year which contributes to toxic residue on the foods cooked. The Baja BBQ firepack is made of charcoal packaging (100% recycled biodegradable paper pulp) which quickly ignites by lighting from the bottom. The chimney holes provide the ventilation needed to produce hot coals. The contents are 2 lbs of natural lump charcoal, all of which burn easily, producing hot coals ready to cook your meal in 15- 20 minutes without any nasty “flavourings”.

The creators are Mike and Maaike, a collaborative team formed by American Mike Simonian and Dutch born Maaike Evers who are into useful experimental design. They designed the Baja BBQ firepack for Lazzari with a patent pending.

The Nissan Pivo is a concept car by Nissan and is powered by a lithium-ion battery. The car is essentially a 360 degree rotating cabin on a chassis of 4 wheels, and hence eliminates the need for reversing and makes parking easier.

RA, the Robotic Agent, one of the features of Pivo, establishes the driver's frame of mind by monitoring facial expressions and voice patterns. Armed with that information, RA interacts with the driver using speech and gestures to help encourage him/her into a more positive mental state. Research shows that a happy driver is a safer driver. In other words, being in a positive frame of mind can help reduce accidents.

Such a futuristic design combined with high-technology car definitely makes consumers crave to drive it home!

Child Author

tikatok.jpgSpringwise: Tikatok is an online community any child can use to write and illustrate stories, share them with friends and family, and even print them out as real paperback and hardcover books. Children can create a book free-form, or they can use the site's "StorySpark" templates to help them get started. Words and drawings are easily saved with a book editor that opens right on the site, requiring no extra software to download or install. Children can drag and drop text screens, write their ideas, change fonts and colours, and insert and delete pages at will. They can also easily add their own original artwork by drawing their pictures and scanning and uploading them, or by mailing them into Tikatok. Using the site's Friends feature, children can invite other friends through an email link to join the Tikatok network. They can also invite others to read their books, join and post their books to Book Clubs on the site, and participate in discussion threads with one another. Security and privacy on the site are stringent, as one might expect. Using Tikatok is free; printed copies of books can be purchased in hardcover or paperback for about USD 20 each.
