Barber Stop

barber.jpgIconoculture: Not everyone thinks a highfalutin salon is necessary for a good haircut. These consumers may be more apt to frequent Barber Stops, self-contained barber "shops" or kiosks that can be easily set up in larger retail settings.

Shaped like giant iconic barber poles, the shops have enough room inside for barber and customer. No appointments necessary, and haircuts cost $11. There are currently four Barber Stops; the owner is working with Mid-States Distributing Company (home, farm and fleet retail organization) and Home Depot to set up shops nationwide.

Go Green, Go Unplug

eject%20powerstrip.jpg

Pedal the plug out with Eject Powerstrip. It is a forward-looking redesign of a powerstrip that would allow people to easily, safely and enjoyably unplug their devices.

People don't unplug their devices because:
1) they are lazy
2) they are too old or disabled to bend down
3) their powerstrips are located in areas they can't access without accidents (under tables, drawers)
4) when dealing with cheap powerstrips, unplugging a device can be dangerous.

Easy Parties

coodin.jpg

Webware.com: Coordinatr is a new events communication service that's been designed for creating spontaneous get-togethers among tight knit groups of friends. The setup is similar to MyPunchbowl and Crusher, with just a few form fields that need to be filled out to create an event. What makes the service particularly useful is its integration with high profile media sharing sites and a great mobile service that lets you send quick distributed messages to the rest of your party friends.

While MyPunchBowl was one of the first of these services to really embrace that people using these services share their party media elsewhere, Coordinatr takes the process a step further by giving everyone with access to the event page a special tag to use. Adding that tag to photos (on Flickr) and videos (on YouTube) will automatically add them to the community page without requiring anyone with administrative access to the event to have to link up content manually.

New Age Bar Go-ers

bar%20drinks.jpg

Iconoculture: Millennial and Gen X parents are changing child-rearing expectations to remain as close to pre-kid life as possible — so much so that meeting up with friends for drinks is low-key enough to bring the kids.

Not everyone thinks it’s so sweet, though. In Park Slope, Brooklyn, Union Hall bar posted a “Please, No Strollers” sign, causing the neighborhood to go up in arms over kid vs. no-kid bargoers.

The brat wars go on. Whether at a bar, restaurant, hotel or health club, lines will continue to be drawn between kid-topia and adult-friendly zones.

Consumers see kids — or no kids — as a badge that unites them with like-minded individuals. Now that the American dream doesn't necessarily involve two kids and a dog, citizens expect lifestyle options that reflect their personal choices.

Meet The iBar

ibar.jpg

Springwise: We wrote recently about the interactive wine bar at Adour in New York City's St. Regis Hotel, and since then we've spotted several mentions of iBar, a related innovation by UK-based Mindstorm.

Unveiled in 2006, the iBar is a customisable surface technology that turns any bar into a giant version of an interactive, touch-sensitive screen. Integrated video projectors can display any content on the bar's milky surface, while built-in intelligent tracking software continually maps the position of every object touching its surface. That input is then used to let the projected content interact dynamically with the movements on the counter, allowing coloured lights, for example, to illuminate, link and follow every movement of hands, bottles and glasses. Multiple people can interact with the iBar at once, and virtual objects can be "touched" with the fingers, enabling a game of pinball where players shoot with their thumbs, for example. Content that can be displayed on the iBar includes internet content, interactive games and advertising; bars can also be fitted with Bluetooth technology to allow consumers to download their own content. The iBar is a stand-alone system comprising modules 2m long, and it can be networked wirelessly to allow interaction between two or more separate units.

Campfire Music

Gizmodiva.com: One thing all of us hate about Light outs and Load shedding is the deprivation of music. There are a thousand emergency products combining 3 or 4 factors. But Life+Gear’s LifeLight compiles all the stuff you’d want in one single pillar, like a radio, a directional compass, a night light, a regular 15super bright light with 20,000MCD LED’s, an emergency decibel siren, emergency signaling flashers and the ‘favoritest’ of all, the external speaker to connect to the iPod or any other MP3 Player. This stuff rocks! LifeLight sells for 50 bucks.

The pillow uses an LED fabric substrate below the surface to wake the user using light. This substrate also functions as a display, showing the time on the pillows surface using the grid of LEDs below.

40 minutes before the pre-set alarm time the pillow begins to glow and gently brings the user out of sleep. This natural waking process helps to set the circadian rhythm or "body clock" and results in more healthy sleep/wake patterns.

Sustainable Style

Inhabitat: We certainly cannot talk about spring sustainable style and layered dressing for the great outdoors without checking in with Patagonia to see what they have on tap for the season ahead. Whether you are a surfer chick, a seasoned rock climber, or an urban adventurer, Patagonia organic cotton hoodies and hemp separates create eco-chic combos for both travel and at home lounging.

Patagonia Women’s ‘Rhythm Hoody’ is a classic staple for climbing groupies as well as beach combers. Its breathable blend of 90% organic cotton and 10% spandex, provides a non-bulky layer of stretchy warmth for early morning hikes or cool nights dining alfresco. (The ‘Aba Daba’ print is, as usual, part of the Patagonia corporate insiders naming-convention). Also in bloom is the Women’s ‘Valley Sweatshirt’, made of 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex. Its breathable and smooth finish fabric allows for a comfortable fit in all climates and situations. The generous hood and front kangaroo pocket are welcome additions to this eco-accent piece.

iPod Docks

Gadgets Weblog: I always liked iPod docks, and some of them are getting pretty original in their construction. For example, the High School Musical Clock radio for the iPod.

As you can see, it's shaped like a locker. Open it up, and you put your iPod within. It also has an integrated AM/FM tuner, a sleep timer, and snooze button. All of it is stuck with the High School Musical franchise stamp, a reminder of the time when high school was clean and platonic.

Well, if you're interested, just walk down to the local Target and put down $59.99 for it.

Coaster Pagers

pagercoaster_ednote_small.jpg
ZD Net Asia: Remember the days before mobile phones made their way into our pockets, when beeping pagers were the toast of the town?

During blogger Eileen Yu's Vegas trip last week, she chanced upon a food outlet that used radio paging technology in its ordering system.

Rather than make its customers stand around the store waiting aimlessly for their numbers to be called when their food is ready, the food outlet hands out pagers shaped like drink coasters to a customer after he places his order.

With the coaster pager in hand, the customer is then free to move around and browse through other outlets at the food court, or return to his table to wait comfortably whilst his order is being prepared. When it's ready for pickup, the coaster pager will light up and vibrate to alert the customer to return to the store and collect his food.

It was a really cool way to reuse an old piece of technology, and apply it in a new real-world environment to provide better customer service. We really don't get to see much of that kind of innovation anymore these days.

Sim Card Reader

sim-card-reader-gadget.jpg

Gadgets Review: Are you paranoid about the fact that your girlfriend or boyfriend is cheating you? Do you want to know, what numbers she just dialed and what SMS had sent? You can hire a private detective for all this tasks, but his services may cost you more than expected. Listening devices are expensive to buy and need a special equipment to listen… There is a solution, which is not based on eavesdropping, and uses a very interesting method of spying: it scans the main chip of every GSM cell phone - SIM card!

This Cell Phone Spy Data Extracktor look just like an ordinary USB Flash drive. However, do not judge it by its size - it can be a powerful tool if used correctly. Just insert the SIM card in the device, plug it in the PC and you will be able to see all the numbers that was dialed through that SIM, even deleted ones! It can also restore deleted SMS messages and call logs, so nothing will be hidden from you. The manufacturer claims, this is the first SIM reader in the world that can actually see deleted messages. More than that, this gadget can be used in peaceful ways, to make backup copies of a phonebook or messages. Or you can make a full SIM card backup, buy a clean SIM card if needed and load your stored backup data on it.

Pig Bank

pigbank.jpeg

TrendHunter: The Credit Card Pig Bank concept is a logical evolution of the ole’ saving piggy bank or donation box. It allows you to swipe your credit card into the adorable pig and voilà, a pre-determined amount of money is transfered from your bank account into the saving/ donation account.

Every time you slide the credit card through the card reader, the software automatically connects to your private bank account and some amount of money will be transfered. The amount could be set by a software installed on the computer to which the pig will connect automatically via bluetooth.

Very Smart Mobs

leadbeater.jpg

Smart mobs re-chart direction - from business to pleasure. The fuel behind mob mentality evolves from its infancy in civil disobedience and business demand to art and social effect. As the days of rights movements and tuangou (Chinese team buying) plateau, group thought accelerates in-step with art and technology.

Social antagonizer, Improv Everywhere, has used this mentality to organize mass synchronization worldwide. ‘Freezes’, events where hundreds of strangers show up to a location called out online and simultaneously freeze in place, have taken off. Just this year, they’ve occurred in New York, Paris, Montreal, Shanghai and more. The study often results in applause from passers-by. Online and mobile technology allows complete strangers to gather without notice and have a coherence that leaves security baffled.

Taken to the next level, curators are asking just how intelligent smart mobs are. James Surowiecki, author of “The Wisdom of Crowds”, hypothesizes that a diverse crowd is wiser at making decisions than even experts. The Brooklyn Art Museum takes on this theory and puts it to the test. A new exhibit, ‘Click’ will attempt crowd-curation. If expectations are met, the projections Charles Leadbeater has made in his book “We Think”, will continue to come fruition. It is anticipated that mobs that think and act collectively will lead areas previously dominated by scholars, organizations and corporations.

Springwise: BookRenter.com is yet another example of a web start-up leaping into a nightmarish logistics problem to make life easier for its customers. The US venture has amassed a multi-million-volume library of new or near-new textbooks, which it rents out to students at college campuses throughout the country. Rental periods range from one to four months, and the savings for students can reach 75 percent of a book’s retail price. Adopting the increasingly popular ‘Netflix model’, BookRenter offers students convenient delivery options and lets them return books by UPS at no charge. Rental terms can be extended as needed, and students can also decide to buy a book if they’d like to keep it.

Bamboo Cellphone

bamboo-cell-phone.jpg

Inhabitat: Here’s a great idea for a cell-phone that is thoroughly green in every way: from its biodegradable bamboo materials, to its thoughtfully considered lifecycle, to its ingenious use of kinetic human power to charge the battery with renewable energy. The ‘Bamboo’ phone, by Dutch designer Gert-Jan van Breugel was one of the finalists shortlisted at this year’s 2008 Greener Gadgets Design Competition (and Jill’s personal favorite). Although this design didn’t end up winning one of the coveted top three prizes in the competition, it certainly caught our kinetic-energy-loving eye.

The Bamboo Phone’s case uses two materials: a bio-plastic which is derived from renewable raw materials such as corn, and bamboo, a grass which grows at such a fast rate, makes it vastly more sustainable than a material such as hardwood. According to van Breugel, three minutes of cranking will provide enough energy for one phone call, though the length of the call was not mentioned. A monochrome display is also included to maximize energy efficiency.

The phone was designed in response to the one billion new handsets being produced every year, with only 10% being recycled. The average mobile customer replaces their phone once every 18 months, causing 36kg of carbon dioxide to be released in the manufacture of a 90 gram phone. Now all this phone needs is a sleeker-looking casing, and we can see this getting snapped up by Nokia or Samsung in a flash.

World's First Organic Cod Farm

0305_cod_460x276.jpg

Guardian.co.uk: It was the perfect product for modern green consumers. For the first time, they could buy Britain's favourite fish - cod - with a clear conscience. It even had a smart, sassy brand name: No Catch. This cod was ethically farmed in the cool, clean seas off Shetland, and it was organic.

On its launch three years ago, No Catch cod, the world's first organic cod farm, was hailed as the answer to the environmental crisis brought on by the perilous fall in cod numbers in the North Sea. Leading chefs in London spoke warmly about its firm flesh and its "really nice white flake".

No Catch - which was snapped up by Sainsbury's, Tesco and Carrefour in France - came with a bold promise: it could eventually produce 30,000 tonnes of farmed fish a year, enough to meet 10% of the UK's insatiable demand for cod, despite its premium price.

A Car Without Windshield Wipers

windshield%20wipers.jpg

Italian car designer Leonardo Fioravanti (who worked for Pininfarina for a number of years) has developed car prototype without windshield wipers.

This amazing technological feat is made possible thanks to the use of 4 layers of glass modified using nanotechnology. The first layer filters the sun and repels the water. The second layer, using 'nano-dust' is able to push dirt to the side. The third layer acts as a sensor that activates the second layer when it detects dirt, while the fourth layer is a conductor of electricity to power this complex mechanism.

Eco-Speakers

eco-speakers.jpg

Popgadget: Fashionation's inexpensive Eco-Speakers are tiny 3.25-inch cubes and made from recycled materials. They are also lightweight, fold flat for portability, come in several colors and patterns, and need no batteries because they draw a bit of power from your iPod or MP3 player.

What's not to love? Well, Eco-Speakers are exceptionally portable because they have no amplifier. And you know what that means: less than wonderful sound.

So are you willing to trade great music sound for speakers that are ecologically sound, also cheap and snazzy? Only you can decide. Fortunately, an experiment won't set you back much. Fashionation's list price is $14.95, but a search will cut that down substantially. I've seen Eco-Speakers for as little as $9.99. They come in several patterns and colors including the inevitable pink (shown), purple, blue, aqua, red, and (of course) green.

Music in the rain umbrella

music%20umbrella.jpg

The dome structure of umbrellas allows sound to be more concentrated, and a handle of umbrella could be a great part for controlling the music.

Sometimes people spin an umbrella unconsciously. If you spin this umbrella to left or right, the music will move forward (right turn) or reverse (left turn). Unfortunately even though it is not raining, you still can use this umbrella. You can just put it in the corner of your living room with cradle, and then also you can enjoy the music from speakers of cradle.

The Messenger Bag isn't stingy on comfort and practicality. There are loads of additional pockets for business or personal accessories, a water bottle pocket and there's even an extra soft air-flow open pocket in the back.

Pineapple Paper Furniture

pineapple%20paper%20furniture.jpg
Cool Hunting: Establishment (an interior design outpost in Manhattan) recently tipped us to Pineapple Paper Furniture, a new line of benches and chairs made from compressed pineapple fibers.

We like the Doonya Chair (pictured above right, $1,900) as well as the Nut Bench ($2,900). They hadn't been added to the website last time we checked, but you can email Establishment directly: info [at] establishmentnyc [dot] com for more information.

Or if you're in Manhattan, stop by the store on Gansevoort Street.
