Light Up The Wall

jonas_samson_wallpaper.jpgCoolBuzz: What can be more relaxing and refreshing than returning home after a tiring day and finding your room lit with beams of soothing rays. Industrial Designer Jonas Samson here comes to give our thoughts a reality. His recent product, the high-tech light-emitting wallpaper, assures us of a revitalizing recovery. Jonas Samson makes it possible to have light from a two-dimensional surface rather than a 3D object.

The light-emitting wallpaper breathes life into boring dull walls and is a good alternative to get rid of the bizarre wall color that goes stale after sometime. This adds an element of strange beauty to the old-fashioned notion of covering walls in rolls of thick, slime-covered linen. Its intricate displays of lights, patterns and silhouettes changes the ambiance of the room, which also makes it perfect for you to enjoy a close moment with your partner. The best part is, when switched off, there is no evidence of any light source.

Bike Dispenser

bikedispense.jpg

The Cool Hunter: Here at TCH, we love riding bikes through the city. There's something immensely pleasing about sailing past scores of traffic with little more than a push of a pedal. And at the same time, you're burning the calories, and doing your bit to stay green. But there's one thing we hate about this simple mode of transport. People like nothing more than stealing them, damaging them, or driving buses into them. While your safe at work crunching the numbers, who's looking after your ride home?

Cue the bike dispensing machine. Brought to you courtesy of bikedispenser.com, a small firm from Amsterdam, the idea is to help facilitate bike rentals in urban areas. Cyclists pay a small fee to hire a bike, and then they can take it where they please. Once they’ve finished, they can return it either to that machine, or another one across town. And because they’ve been fitted with RFID tags, they won’t all have been nicked before you can get one.

SMS Trading Cards

trading-cards.jpg

TrendCentral: Atlantic Records has partnered with Hook Mobile to create mobile SMS-based trading cards featuring music artists from the label. Fans will purchase the cards via text and just like the old school tangible baseball cards that we all remember, cards will be distributed at random and some will be rarer than others. Collectors can hold onto their cards (which will be stored both on users’ phones and online), trade them or redeem them for prizes. To promote his recently released album T.I. vs. T.I.P, chart topping artist T.I. will be featured on the first set of 45 cards.

USB Calculator Mouse

calc%20mouse.bmp

Gizmodo: Here's an idea for number-crunching road warriors that might be even better: a USB mouse with an integrated calculator. This calculator mouse is a real, shipping product.

This $30 mouse is also an improvement over that numerical keypad because its screen shows you the results of your calculations, and you don't need to use any of your precious laptop's screen real estate to see that calculator application running, nor do you need to run any additional apps just to add up a few numbers.

Consumers' Seach Engine

3luxe-logo.gif3LUXE: has launched a new editorially-driven review site designed to simplify the online research/purchase process by giving consumers a means to "Simply find the best of everything." Instead of returning an overwhelming number of choices as search engines do, 3LUXE only provides the three best products or services.

"We started 3LUXE to help people save time, and possibly their sanity, when researching a product purchase online," said Doug Worple, CEO of 3LUXE. "People want to do research to avoid making poor purchase decisions, but time constraints and the overwhelming amount of information available online work against you unless you know exactly what you want. Comparison Shopping Engines currently help consumers with 'where to buy'; 3LUXE intends to be the destination of choice that helps you determine 'what to buy."

3LUXE updates reviews as new products are released, and also based on user feedback. Developed on Ruby on Rails, 3LUXE utilizes technology to enable visitor feedback on "Best Of" selections through a voting mechanism: "Luxe It" or "Leave It". Visitors are also encouraged to leave comments or ask questions on any given product or category.

In essence, 3LUXE does the research consumers would do if they had more time. These "Best Of" reviews cover a wide range of categories from appliances to airplanes, from sports products to spa resorts, and trucks to travel.

Energy Walk

crowd%20farming.jpg

Iconoculture: Our current alternative energy source of choice is "crowd farming." That practice — which turns the energy people create as they walk, run and otherwise go about their daily activities into electricity.

The system could be installed in areas of high pedestrian traffic, placing blocks below the normal flooring that bounce and rub up against each other as they're stepped on. This movement is then harnessed and turned into electricity.

America is on the search for alt-energy sources. From wind power to crowd farming, the need to wean ourselves from standard sources of juice and find greener alternatives is inspiring innovators who hope to embrace a savvier, more sustainable future.

Crowd farming is definitely not a residential innovation, but nightclubs, fitness centers and college campuses are popping up as possible venues to harness the power of the people and throw it back into the system.

Acai Berries - The Latest Craze

acai_berries.jpg

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: It's small, plump, purple and sexy. It's the acai berry.

Harvested from palm trees in the Brazilian Amazon, acai (pronounced ah-SIGH-ee) seems to have everything going for it.

It's got more antioxidants than blueberries, red wine or pomegranates. It's rich in omega fatty acids, fiber and vitamins. It packs a delectable berry-cocoa flavor - think red wine with a strong infusion of chocolate.

And its growing popularity in the United States -- in smoothies, energy drinks, juices and supplements -- might even help to preserve the Amazon rainforest, since acai farming can provide a sustainable alternative to logging, cattle farming and other industries that cause deforestation.

Acai took root in the United States after California surfer Ryan Black went on a trip to Brazil in 1999. He found the locals eating a purplish mush, which they made from berries that grew in clumps on the tops of palm trees. He saw an opportunity to market acai in the United States to foodies, athletes and the health-conscious.

Prepaid Cab

get-home-free.jpg

Springwise: Launched in eleven Minneapolis suburbs this month, Get Home Free is a flat rate, prepaid cab card that gets its holder home safely. Mainly targeted at teenagers and college students, the concept's initiators are aiming to help out kids who are stuck with car trouble, have been drinking, or whose ride home has fallen through. Cardholders place a call to the Get Home Free hotline, and a car is immediately dispatched to bring them home, no questions asked.

Teen drinking and driving is a serious issue. As reported in the Star Tribune: "According to the 2004 Minnesota Student Survey, 28 percent of high school seniors reported having driven after using alcohol or drugs at least once in the previous year. Also, almost 40 percent of seniors reported that they had ridden with someone who had been using substances." Having a Get Home Free card as an emergency back-up should help keep some of them off the road.

Video Email

talkfusion.jpg

Video Email is a revolutionary new way in how we communicate with one another. In our personal lives, we send out an average of 15 emails per week. In our business lives, the company as a collective group sends out hundreds if not thousands of emails. The pre-existing emails encompass two methods to communicating: text and pictures. Studies show that the average human being only retains 10% of what we read, only 20 percent of what we see with pictures. However, the average human being retains 50% of what they see AND hear. Hence the concept of video email is the wave of the future. It is a new and unique way of contacting perspective clients, retaining existing clients, and rekindling relationships with past clients. Not only that, for personal use, there's no reason the grandparents in a different state have to miss the new baby's first steps or little Bobby's first home run anymore. Video email is a product that will bring an increasingly globalized world closer and accelerate the process.

Using video email allows businesses a unique way to communicate with their clients, which not only increases retention, but also increases intimacy. Having face to face contact allows the clients to remember who they're doing business with. It allows people to say thank you in a more meaningful way. Realtors can now send real tours where they physically go in the house room to room and comment on its amenities rather than virtual tours through email. Pastors can inform their congregation about the retreat that's taking place next Saturday. Doctors can now get their secretaries to video email their patients to remind them of their next appointment. Company executives can send out a motivational message to their employees even if they are in a different city. The possibilities are limitless.

Words of Wisdom, On Your Car

youraffirmation.jpg

Windshield Wisdom Cards are little placards you place on your car's dashboard. They're white letters printed backwards on a black background -- so they reflect up in readable form onto the bottom edge of your windshield. They're out of the way, so you see them seeming to float there. They do not interfere with your field of vision in any way.

So now, as you drive, you can have positive statements of affirmation and gratitude reminding you to choose your thoughts. You can stay focused on your goals and get more out of your drive time. There are several all ready for your use. You can also order special Windshield Wisdom Cards with your very own goals or favorite sayings.

Cooling Mists

Ohio.com: In the summer, misters that spray fine droplets of water on tourists are a common sight at casino pools and restaurant patios. Now the cooling systems are becoming a hot trend in outdoor living at home.

''It's the next step after patio heaters,'' said Jerry Rike, owner of Rapid Cool Misting Systems, based in the Los Angeles area. His company has installed misters at the Bellagio, Mirage and Venetian casinos in Las Vegas. ''People want to extend the season when they can enjoy the outdoors in comfort. It's like having an air conditioner outdoors.''

On a dry day, misting systems can reduce the ambient temperatures by 28 degrees, Rike said. The thin spray ''flash evaporates'' and doesn't leave droplets on the skin.

Newer misters have high-pressure pumps and nozzles with microscopic spray holes, and they do a better job of dispensing moisture.

Rapid Cool sells stainless-steel pipe systems that can be concealed in soffits or behind fascia boards of covered patios and overhangs.

Homeowners can install the systems, which start at about $1,500, Rike said. The pump makes about as much noise as a room air-conditioning unit, so it should be placed away from the patio area.

Rapid Cool also sells poles resembling shepherd's hooks that can be installed along the railings of decks. Rapid Cool and other companies, including catalog retailer Frontgate, also sell misting fans, good for poolside patios.

''On very humid days, high-pressure systems make the air 15 or 16 degrees cooler,'' Rike said. ''You can wear your glasses and not get speckles of water on the lenses.''

Eco-Resorts

Edmonton Journal: As more green-minded Canadians look to spend their vacation dollars in eco-friendly places, environmentally sensitive resorts, hotels, inns and lodges are popping up like organic mushrooms.

Whitewater Village, a 38-cottage year-round eco-resort planned by Windmill Developments, one of Canada's top green builders, is just the latest addition to the growing list of such vacation venues across the country.

"We feel it's a fairly untapped market," said Jonathan Westeinde, Windmill's managing partner. "It's a little outside the box for what we do but part of the reason we're there is it interests me a lot. When you look at the market for green and sustainable, you're getting downtown urban condo dwellers and you're getting a lot of cottage owners."

The market for eco-resorts is growing and will continue to do so, said Joseph Hnatiuk, president of the Saskatchewan Nature and Ecotourism Association, which has been accrediting ecotourist lodges, parks, hotels and tourism sites since 2000 under a program approved by the International Ecotourism Society.

Featuring geothermal heating and cooling, solar hot water and electricity, the development will break ground in spring 2008 along the Ottawa River, northeast of Ottawa near rapids that draw whitewater rafters and kayakers from around the world.

Whitewater Village will be surrounded by a 4,000-acre land trust to keep further development at bay, aims to be carbon neutral and will have a peat moss sanitation system. The exterior of the cottages, generally two-storey structures of 1,700 square feet, will be constructed of logs certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Interior features will include bamboo floors, wool carpets, formaldehyde-free kitchen cabinets and recycled-paper countertops.

Classical Music Ringtones

classical-ringtonwa.jpg

TrendWatching.com: The main attraction at Booseytones is its wide range of less pedestrian ringtones. Being the world's largest publisher of classical music, Boosey & Hawkes can draw from an immense catalogue of music by such distinguished 20th century composers as Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Britten, Adams and Reich. Previous centuries are represented by a host of venerable composers, from Handel to Tchaikovsky. After replacing Nokia's Gran Vals with a truetone version of Adam's Short Ride in a Fast Machine, dedicated followers of classical music (read: boomers) will also be pleased to swap standard cellphone wallpapers with a photograph of a pensive Prokofiev, or an engraving of Mozart's dapper silhouette. The company now has local sites for the US, UK and Germany. Which leaves plenty of space for expansion and competition.

Loyalty Through Sustainability

kimpton-hotel.jpg

Triple Pundit: Kimpton Hotels, based in San Francisco with over 40 three- and four-star boutique hotels around the US, has made a life-long commitment to environmental responsibility. They've proven that operating with sustainable values won't stop them from delivering a premium guest experience. In fact, polled hotel guests say they are loyal to Kimpton because they appreciate the sustainable ethic. A good portion of their clientele are business travelers whose companies have also adopted CSR strategies, and are committed to consuming products and services with the least impact.

You won't hear about their green initiative on a flashy ad campaign, because Kimpton doesn't advertise. What they save in the marketing department, they spend on programs for employees and enhancing guest experience, through programs like their EarthCare program.

Through this initiative, Kimpton provides in-room recycling, donates beverage bottled to local charities, prints with soy-based inks on recycled paper, offers organic snacks, gives guests the opportunity to re-use towels and linens, and serves only organic, shade grown and free trade coffees. These are things that any hotel could (and should) do at little or no additional cost, and Kimpton doesn't stop there.

Bullet-proof Backpacks

Staten Island Advance: Shopping for school supplies has always been serious business, but the climate in our society means that the wrong choices could cost your son or daughter his or her life.

At least that's the belief of concerned Massachusetts dads Mike Pelonzi and Joe Curran, who have introduced a carry-all that comes with bulletproof lining.

"Affordable, lightweight defense for all ages..." is the slogan their company - MJ Safety Solutions - trumpets on its Web site, mychildspack.com.

"I'm a parent and so is Joe and we wanted a way of keeping kids safe at school and this is what we came up with," says Pelonzi.

Interactive Floorplans

floor-planner.jpg

Webware: Whether you custom order a sleek, suede couch or drag in a ratty, plaid one found on Craigslist, planning where to put it can be a pain. Floor Planner can help. This site from Dutch designers enables you to arrange what you have in your own flat or conjure up a dream home.

Add your home's measurements, maybe a background picture, and topic tags to help other users find your plan (or keep it to yourself), and you're ready to drag and drop sofas, plants, tables, countertops, and so on into your rooms. You get one plan for free, just enough to mock up an apartment. Should you become addicted--or need this tool for work--pricing ranges from $29 per year for five projects with the Plus account, up to $1,140 annually for an enterprise business. The animated how-to was pretty helpful for getting started, but I wish it had audio narration. Luckily, the site worked equally well in both IE and Firefox.

You can add textures, such as the grain of a hardwood floor or red velvet couch upholstery. You can even drop in a pinball machine, if it fits (you had to visit the basement of my childhood home to play ours). In addition to figuring out how to squeeze in our furniture, we need tools to help maximize the energy efficiency, available natural light, and indoor air quality where we live--such as a MyAbodo for grownups mixed with power sensors and software, such as Agile Waves or the Lucid Group's Building Dashboard.

Latest Wedding Trends

KansasCity.com: The latest trends in wedding include having wedding websites with TMI for orientating guests, budget wedding gowns, as well as green weddings.

Wedding Web sites with TMI

A wedding Web site is a must, a virtual clearinghouse to assist guests with everything from chapel address to hotel accommodations.

Of course, some couples go much further. They include details of how they locked eyes across a crowded room, what kind of wine they ordered on their first date, biographies of the entire wedding party, even photographs of themselves embracing passionately.

It’s all very sweet. Until it gets cloying. Or annoying. Or just too much. Like the time a bride and groom revealed — on their wedding Web site — that their relationship began with a one-night stand.

Observers say that because the wedding-Web site industry is still only a few years old, the rules for what’s acceptable are still fuzzy. Many sites are set up with fields to be filled in: “first date,” “proposal” and so on. And so the tales come rushing forth.

Anna Post, author of the forthcoming Emily Post’s Wedding Parties, uses this rule: Don’t include anything that you wouldn’t tell guests face to face.

Budget wedding gowns

A once-in-a-lifetime experience no longer requires a once-in-a-lifetime investment. So here comes the bride — in a budget wedding gown from Target. The gowns that were introduced in May are sold through Target.com for less than $200. Bridesmaid dresses sell for as little as $30. J. Crew offers wedding gowns for $295 to $2,450.

The typical bride spends more than $1,000 on a wedding gown.

Green weddings

Eco-conscious couples are spending a lot of time and money planning weddings that reflect their environmentally friendly lifestyles.

They’re using recycled paper and minimizing the amount of paper used for invitations, place cards and programs. Creating centerpieces with pesticide-free flowers and potted plants that can be planted in the yard after the wedding. Serving organic and vegetarian menus.

Old School Travel

old-style-suitcase.jpg

Babygadget: OK, I know the whole concept of going on holiday is exciting for children, but you can make it even more so with a lovely piece of luggage like this old-style suitcase from Couverture. Stickers plastered across it are redolent of the old days of steamer travel and world cruises, and might - who knows? - even encourage an impromptu geography or history lesson. What's more, it's built to old-fashioned and robust standards, so with a bit of luck you'll get quite a few years' use out of it.

The nicest thing of all, though, is that Couverture will make each of these suitcases to order, and no two are exactly the same. With a choice of four different colours, it's enough to make the ordering process feel really special. All that excitement and the holiday hasn't even begun!

Plug and Play Hotel

qbic%20hotel.jpg

BusinessWeek: There are hotels built on stilts in the ocean, hotels fashioned out of former royal palaces, even hotels set among jungle treetops. So why not craft a hotel that can be plugged into an existing space in any city in the world? That was the thinking behind Qbic Hotels, a low-cost, high-design concept made up of prefabricated rooms that literally come out of a box.

Qbic allows guests to make their reservations online, with rooms ranging from €39 to €139 (about $80 to $200) a night, based on an advanced booking system. Once at the hotel, guests receive an electronic card that's needed to check in and check out.

In order to create a hotel in big cities where real estate is often costly and space at a premium, Qbic's founders came up with a novel idea: Create a prefab, plug-and-play module called a Cubi that can be outfitted inside existing space.

What distinguishes Qbic—at least for now—is its ability to offer both high style and low cost in a self-service environment. "Qbic is quite stylish and slick," says Harteveldt. "I think that it appeals to someone who appreciates style after being in an airplane cabin that is devoid of style."

Dry Erase Paint

The Ledger Online: You can turn a wall, a cupboard door or just about any other surface into a memo board with Rust-Oleum's new Dry Erase Paint.

The paint, a two-part product that you mix together, produces a white surface that can be written or drawn on with a dry-erase marker and then erased.

It can be applied to interior surfaces including drywall, Masonite, wood, concrete and metal.

The paint is available at Lowe's stores and is being rolled out to The Home Depot locations. A kit that makes enough paint to cover about 7 feet by 7 feet costs about $24.

Retro Arcade Gamble

pong.jpg

Iconoculture: One-armed bandits make way for the one-paddle bandit — Bally Technologies is rolling out a video slot machine based on Atari's 1972 table tennis-based game Pong.

Luck still needs to be a lady; gamblers must spin a trio of bonus icons on the five-reel monitor during regular play to activate a 45-second Pong showdown against a computer opponent.
It’s slots of fun no matter what. The bonus Pong round has a guaranteed minimum payout, so even those with poor hand-eye coordination leave a winner.

Bally Pong is the first in a planned skill-based series of electronic casino games; up next is the brick-busting game Breakout.

Sure, poker is still sorta cool, but many Xers remain nostalgic for the days of old-school games; a slot update of retro arcade staples is a decent bet to bring out the little kid in grown-up gamblers.

High-score bragging rights were once the reward for hours spent polishing game skills. Who wouldn’t trade that in for cold hard cash?

wattpad.gifSpringwise: Commuters, students and others who rely heavily on mobile devices but may often find themselves with time on their hands can now tap into a free online source for stories, essays, jokes and other text files that can be downloaded to their mobiles, read at their convenience and then sent to others via SMS. Wattpad operates much like YouTube, with users supplying files to share with one another.

To get started, all customers need are compatible devices and data plans, and they can download Wattpad directly through their mobile Internet browsers at no charge—the site is financed by advertising dollars. Community members can share just about any type of text files—short stories, news articles, study notes, movie reviews—anything, provided they have the appropriate copyrights. They can even upload shopping lists, driving directions or reminders (though they should bear in mind that these files are accessible to the entire Wattpad community!). Top 3 this week: an essay by Albert Einstein, a dialogue-only short story by science fiction writer Terry Bisson, and quotes from The Simpsons.

Feeling Cool

ChillyPacks.jpg

Popgadget: My poor dog, Zach, has been mostly indoors for the last couple of weeks due to the heat wave. He just loves to come everywhere with me, but I dare not leave him in the car while I run errands or even take him on long walks. We might both pass out on the sidewalk.

While this ChillyDog vest won't help me much, it might keep Zach cool enough to go around the block without panting. If I don't make it, he can drag me home and put me in front of the air conditioning vent until I come to. It's a low tech cooling device, basically just ice packs inside of a vest, but not a bad idea really, especially for working dogs who have to be outdoors at times even in this miserable weather.

Taste Worth Dying For

TrendHunter: The Heart Attack Grill, located in Phoenix, Arizona, features everything that’s bad for you. The menu is full of heart clogging food, plus dangerous combos like cigarettes and beer with your meal. The staff is dressed in (sexy) nursing attire to help complete the imagery (and anger residents). Here’s a nice bonus: If you can finish the Quadruple Bypass Burger, they’ll give you a free push back to your car in a wheelchair.

The t-shirts sum it up, “Heart Attack Grill - Taste Worth Dying For.”

Over The Limits

bong_vodka.jpg

Ubercool: Tongue-in-cheek references to the illegal is a trend propelled by Generation X-tasy. First there was Cocaine Energy Drink, which caused a stir earlier this year, leading 7-Eleven to pull the drink from its shelves. Then there’s Meth Coffee. Both were preceded by Pimp Juice – introduced in 2003 by St. Louis’ Fillmore Street Brewery and based on a Nelly rap song of the same name. Now comes Bong Vodka – from the limit-testing Dutch:

You can’t blame the Dutch for constantly pushing the boundaries. Their latest Generation X-tasy exploit, Bong Vodka, is imported by Bong Spirit Imports of Orlando, FL.

Baggu

baggu.jpg

TrendCentral: Designed by mother-daughter team Joan and Emily, Baggus are sleekly designed, easily portable, reusable bags that come in a number of funky colors. Meant to be used as an alternative to paper and plastic shopping bags, the company estimates that using one BAGGU for a year avoids the waste of 300 to 700 disposable bags. We think this will resonate with consumers who are looking to ‘do good’ in small and effortless ways.

beautifulvending.jpg

The Cool Hunter: It's Saturday night, the music is pumping and you are on a hot date . Everything is going down fine until the humidity in the club suddenly turns your hair from Cher to Macy Gray in about 7 seconds.

Fear not, entrepreneurs, Richard Starrett and Neil Macka, have come to the rescue with their Hot Iron vending machine. With 500 units already placed in clubs/gyms throughout the U.K , the Beautiful Vending company provide coin operated hair straightening hot irons, for the quick and convenient use of club patrons who's hair has suddenly gone 'poof'.

Using professional grad GHD tongs, the irons run for 2 minutes per use and cost $2.00. The idea is perfect for countries where the weather can be unpredictable and affect recently straightened hair.
