Solar Roast Coffee

photo_blog_solarroast.jpg

Springwise: Customers who want to start their day on an ecologically friendly note may want to fill their mugs with Solar Roast Coffee—a fresh new brew for java lovers that is roasted using clean abundant solar energy.

Based in Pueblo, Colorado, Solar Roast Coffee uses only 100% organic or fair trade coffee beans. Their special solar-powered roasting technique ensures the least impact on the environment. Not just a regular roaster powered by solar panels, Solar Roast’s Helios 2.0 catches rays of sunshine directly on a drum roaster filled with beans. The roaster is capable of reaching temperatures upwards of 550 degrees Fahrenheit, and swivels and tilts allowing it to track the sun throughout the day. No fossil fuels are burned to heat the beans, and no electric connection is needed to power the roaster’s fans and motors. The result? Likely the most earth-friendly coffee available on the market—and one the owners are hoping will be a hit with consumers.

Sleep Music

photo_blog_sleepbeats.jpgDailyCandy: If your mind wanders before three, try Bedtime Beats, a CD designed to help you snooze. Unlike your Ambien/Prosecco experiment, the sleep aid was mixed by real scientists.

The smarty-pants at Case Western Reserve University discovered that classical music played at 60-80 beats per minute can improve your sleep. Using that info, a couple of sandmen (er, sandwomen) deejayed a collection to conk you out.

The CD includes more than two hours of Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, et al — all of which have been remastered to the optimal tempo and volume. Just press play fifteen minutes before sleepy time and relax to the beats of the rhythm of the night.

Fresh Air

inov8%20AD%20unit%282%29.jpgGizmodo: Hospitals and germ freaks rejoice! English tech company Inov8 (sounds a bit ravey, doesn't it?) has come up with the Air Disinfection unit, or AD. It recreates fresh air, which is a key factor in killing microbes, without the need for opening a window in the operating theater. Any surgeons or hospital staff reading, that was a joke, by the way.

Although launched yesterday in London, the device, which is about the size of a flower vase, is currently being tested in 17 veterans' hospitals over here with a view to making it available in the US.

Within an hour of switching it on, the AD can reduce bacteria levels to zero as it creates reactive hydrogen radicals, then pumps them out into the atmosphere, purging the air of bacteria. Faced with the AD, even the tough superbug MRSA is apparently toast - and that can only be a good thing.

Treehouse

photo_blog_fabaxo1.jpg

Iconoculture: Architects Mitchell Joachim and Javier Arbona teamed up with environmental engineer Lara Greden to dream up the ultimate tree house — a two-story, water-recycling, solar-powered, living crib. They're testing techniques for growing a weave of vines and trees that will form a lattice-like outer structure. Inside walls will be packed with clay and plastered.

The team is experimenting with a soy-based film for the windows that would expand as the house grew. The trio say a house would take about five years to grow. They envision tree-house farms where growing houses are tended and homeowners can pick out a finished house for transport as far as 100 miles.

Self-repairing Plastic

self_healing_x220.jpgFuturewire: Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have developed a nanotechnology polymer that can "heal" itself by filling in cracks and tears automatically. Although self-healing plastic is not an entirely new concept, the UIUC material is different because it can repair itself multiple times without any intervention.

The material could have important uses where making repairs is difficult, where materials are under enormous stress and/or where material failure would be catastrophic -- such as in implanted medical devices, airplane and spacecraft components, and microprocessors. The UIUC researchers emphasize, however, that practical applications are years away, and that initial products will be highly expensive.

Iconoculture: With this ring, I thee shed — in a miniature casket suitable for display. Wedding Ring Coffins, created by divorce survivor Jill Testa, help the recently unhitched bury dead marriages in style. The tiny mahogany coffins look just like the real thing, complete with brass handles and a black velvet lining that sets the ring off nicely if the client opts for an open casket.

Most mourners don't actually bury the coffins. It's more fun to share the sentiments engraved on personalized plaques, which range from dignified ("Bury the past and move on") to vengeful ("Six feet isn't deep enough") to sly ("She should have learned how to play golf").

Healing Waters

aqua.JPG

Iconoculture: While Coca-Cola is busy trying to come up with the perfect mix of pure and healthy for the anti-corn-syrup crowd, the folks at Aqua Tan think they've stumbled on the cure for what ails Coke, and just about everyone else on the planet.

The healing water comes from the cave of Massabielle, where a young girl claimed she saw an apparition of a "lady," who has now become the legendary Lady of Lourdes.

Aqua Tan products are known for providing what the company calls a "couture tan" — a self-tanner in a bottle that is pure, clean and healthy. For consumers looking to go gold, Aqua Tan's marketing message is that they provide a healthy alternative: Their tanner is light, clean and inspired by the purity of water. Consumers on the hunt for purity and healing are relying more and more on organic and wholesome. And Aqua Tan can provide the sun, and more, in specially designed bottles.

Reactee

Springwise: T-shirts have long been conversation starters, letting their wearers express bold political views, support their favourite artist or display their quirky sense of humour. Reactee takes the interaction to another level by harnessing the power of text messaging, creating t-shirts that "text back".

How it works? A customer picks a personal slogan and a unique keyword, which Reactee prints on an American Apparel t-shirt. The user gets the t-shirt and flaunts it. Anyone interested in knowing more about the slogan or its wearer can text the keyword to 41411, and will get an immediate response as set by the wearer, who also receives a copy of the message including the sender's cellphone number. The response can be updated as often as the user likes, either at reactee.com or on the fly by cellphone. The shirts cost USD 20-27 depending on size and colour, and texting only works with US phones.

Reactee users include individuals who want to connect others to a cause they're passionate about, or who simply want to ignite a response from potential admirers ("Am I hot?"). On a broader scale, organizations like the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas and YouthNoise are using the t-shirts to connect to supporters, as does MC Hammer (who's working on a comeback).

Nature's Design

commuun_portrait.jpgCool Hunting: Eschewing chemical-based fabrics for Japanese organic cotton and Italian linen, Paris-based designers Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate of Commuun believe that "environmental issues can not be ignored when considering the future of fashion and society as a whole." Each collection is inspired by natural landscape and "the balance and tension in nature." While the pieces are fastidiously crafted and ecologically sound, they also breathe a rebellious and bold spirit through color and cut. The fall 2007 collection was inspired by photographs of the sea, importing colors from the ocean-like stark blues and haunting blacks, which are grounded by uncluttered silhouettes. There are ethereal tops floating above skin-tight miniskirts, dresses with undulating layers, and graphic blouses anchored by slim pants. The collection is intended for a woman who is "strong and still pure in ways," says Furudate. Do not expect the earth mother archetype. With the pair's understated confidence, Commuun can easily spearhead the movement for sustainable clothing that's still enduringly chic.

Plastic Business

petbottles.jpgTriplePundit: NPR has a great little piece today about the destiny of the (cue Carl Sagan) billions and billions of plastic water bottles that we go though every year, the majority of which end up in a landfill.

About 23% however, do wind up being recycled into various uses, typically carpeting or other downcycled products. Interestingly the majority of this new-found raw material is shipped to China. Although it's very interesting that China has found a way to purchase and profit from our waste, what peaks my interest most is wondering about the remaining 77% of PET bottles that are being tossed in landfills. Sound's like a monumental business opportunity to me.

Melbourne duo Myke Christoffel and Lara Deutsch have capitalized on the growing market for the latter with their boutique organic skincare range Stem Organics. Sales for natural and organic personal care have doubled between 2002 and 2006, with 78% of adults in developed countries preferring to use products over chemically derives ones, so the brand hit the stores at the perfect time.

Interestingly Christoffel and Deutsch actually launched the brand in the US first, selling through online retailers and more recently, through hip lifestyle boutique chain Theory and Fred Segal, where Stem Organics is fast becoming a ‘must have’ brand among their urban, image and health conscious customers.

With IVC (interactive video commerce), viewers can “click” through highly organized menus, selecting product ranging from categories such as jewelry, electronics, clothing, and appliances to more media-based product such as in-show music, video, and show branded merchandise. There’s even a sponsor section, where viewers can check out the brands and products advertised during the show. Viewers also have an option to access detailed information on the show and cast members. The search and purchasing process is similar to an online retailer, but instead of using a mouse, viewers use their remote control to click through selections, choose color/size/version, etc., and ultimately buy items.

Media Market Value

photo_blog_mediapredict.gifSpringwise: Think consumers can predict the next big book, CD, television show or movie better than top producers and publishing houses can? Media Predict challenges users to put their virtual money where their mouths are with an online prediction market game, where players buy and sell shares based on how well they think new entertainment ventures might do in the real marketplace.

Here's how it works: when users register, they get 5,000 virtual dollars to begin investing. They can scan the markets for book proposals, up-and-coming musical acts, script treatments and TV pilots. Each is valued in virtual dollars per share based on perceived potential. If shares of a particular book proposal are going for 55 dollars, for instance, the book has about a 55% chance of being published. If a project seems like it might take off, a wise investor can put his or her money behind it. Or, conversely, he or she can sell if stock seems like it might plummet. In doing so, players drive the market value—and those who have a keen eye for the next big blockbuster get rewarded for it. When a deal goes through—for instance, if a book proposal gets signed to a publisher—shares pay off at USD 100 each. And on the flipside, when a venture doesn't succeed, share value bottoms out at USD 0.

Last year, footwear manufacturer Timberland started placing a "nutritional label" on each shoe box, educating consumers about the product they are purchasing, including where it was manufactured, how it was produced and what effect it has on the environment. Nice touch: messaging inside the box asks customers "what kind of footprint will you leave?" and provides a call to action for them after purchase. Hey, it takes two to tango!

Rugged Laptop

General_Dynamics_Rugged_Notebooks_001_270x202.jpgCrave: Mobile computing can be a haphazard business, and new notebooks from General Dynamics and Panasonic give their owners permission to drop them (from a reasonable distance) as often as they like.

General Dynamics' GoBook MR-1 claims to be the smallest fully rugged ultramobile PC, and it may very well be. It weighs 2 pounds, and is about the size of a small jewelry box. It was made to have all the same features and capabilities of the full-size GoBook XR-1 but in a more compact form factor. That means four wireless connections: Wireless LAN, Bluetooth, GPS, and Wireless Wide Area Network. It's built on Intel's new Santa Rosa platform.

All of General Dynamics' touchscreen notebooks, which are cold- and heat-resistant, now come with its proprietary outdoor viewing capability, called DynaVue. Outdoor viewing is one of the most confounding problems related to rugged computing. General Dynamics' solution is to put the polarizing film closer to the top of the touchscreen underneath the glass to reduce reflection.

Consumers aren't General Dynamics' customers--the company sells to militaries, telecom and utility workers, and public safety officers.

Green Milk Bottles

greenbottle.jpgSpringwise: Designed and manufactured in Britain, Greenbottle is a biodegradable milk bottle that uses a smart two-part system to aid recycling. The bottles are composed of a cardboard outer manufactured from pulped, recycled cardboard, which is lined with an inner sleeve of biodegradable plastic made from corn starch. The plastic keeps the cardboard from becoming soggy, and the cardboard makes for easy transport, storage and pouring. Once the bottle is empty, the inner sleeve can be pulled out and will decompose in a landfill within six weeks. The cardboard outer can be put out for recycling with other paper or thrown in with kitchen and garden waste for home composting.

Driving Ability

red-car-200.jpgIconoculture: Kids with disabilities who can't maneuver joysticks don't have to miss out on the fun of radio-control cars. Dream-Racer builds technology that enables kids to "drive" the cars using simple body movements instead of joysticks.

The prototype baseball cap, built for a child paralyzed in an auto accident, helps him steer the car with his head. Gloves and shoes can be fitted with similar controls for kids with other types of disabilities.

There's no "joy" in a joystick you can't control. Tech that makes toys more accessible is way cool.

Many adults with disabilities would love to get their heads on a Dream-Racer.
If baseball caps can replace joysticks for radio cars, why not use them for videogames?
