"I've lost my keys come home"

IT Sneak: New website TextMeOuttaHere.co.uk will, for a pound, send its users a text message at a prearranged time to help them lie and cheat their way out of an awkward situation. Having seen “over 1000 excuses sent in its first month”, founder Emma Kane was moved to say: “Britain's mobiles phone users are obviously a devious lot.” Sneak, for one, resents this kind of sweeping statement. Given that market penetration of mobiles in the UK is roughly 100 percent, what Kane is actually saying is that everyone in the country is a devious liar - including you, Sneak, your spouse or partner, your best friend and your vicar. That’s slander, surely

Supermarket Self-checkouts

photo_blog_selfcheckout.jpg

BurlingtonFreePress.com: There are fewer and fewer people asking, "Paper or plastic?" at supermarket checkout aisles throughout the Burlington area and across the country.

At Price Chopper's Burlington store, eight of 19 checkout lanes are equipped with automated "Easy Scan Checkout" machines. Each of the two sets, known as "quads," has four automated checkout stations and one employee to verify age for alcohol purchases, witness credit card transactions and assist shoppers.

The rest of the duties are left to customers: punching produce codes, weighing vegetables, scanning for prices and bagging food. To pay, shoppers feed cash into the machine or swipe a credit or debit card.

"They are embracing the opportunity to participate in a process that will help them move faster," Price Chopper spokeswoman Mona Golub said of the shoppers, adding that those who ring-up their own purchases experience "a sense of accomplishment."

EcoHangers

photo_blog_ecohanger.jpg

Springwise: 3.5 billion wire hangers are tossed into landfills every year, and that's just in the United States. While the hangers are light, inexpensive and sturdy, they're not exactly bio-degradable. Hanger Network has developed an alternative: a dry cleaner's hanger made entirely from recycled paper. EcoHangers are sturdy and cheap. And because they're paper, they can be completely covered in full-colour advertising.

Everybody wins: Hanger Network creates a media network of up to 3.5 billion in-home 'views', and advertisers gain valuable entry into consumers' bedrooms for less than the price of a stamp. Dry cleaners get free hangers (wire hangers are about USD 0.08 each), and consumers no longer have to struggle with awkward tangles of wires. And on top of it all, it's an earth-friendlier solution. What's not to love? ;-)

X-Paste

photo_blog_x-paste-toothpas.jpg

Shiny Shiny: Do you spend hours worrying about the crust round the top of your toothpaste tube? Do you judge people by whether they squeeze the tube from the end or the middle? Do you think perhaps you should readjust your priorities in life? If the answer to the first two is yes, and no to the last, you should look into the X-paste dispenser.

It takes any toothpaste tube, and promises to deposit 'the perfect amount' of toothpaste morning and night. And so ends another of the great engineering conundrums.

Hidden Clue

photo_blog_camerahidden.jpgBBC News: Japanese firm Fujitsu is pushing a technology that can encode data into a picture that is invisible to the human eye but can be decoded by a mobile phone with a camera. The company believes the technology will have spin off implications for the publishing industry.

"The concept is to be able to link the printed page into the digital domain," said Mike Nelson, general manager for sales operations at Fujitsu Europe.

The technique stems from a 2,500-year-old practice called steganography, which saw the Greeks sending warnings of attacks on wooden tablets and then covering them in wax and tattooing messages on shaved heads that were then covered by the regrowth of hair. Fujitsu's technique works by taking advantage of the sensitivities of the human eye, which struggles to see the colour yellow.

Dogs Beer

kwispelbier.jpg

Popgadget: They say that a woman's best friend is her dog, and those dogs deserve a drink every now and again. A nice young lady from Holland brewed up a nonalcoholic beer for her Weimaraners as a treat for a day's hard work, and now she's selling it as "Kwispelbier" after the Dutch word for a wagging tail. Technically, it isn't a beer at all but more of a non-alcoholic malt liquor flavored with beef extracts. Either way, the dogs love it.

Those of us in the states can purchase doggie beer from the original purveyor: Happy Tail Ale from Dog Star Brewing. The two companies have very similar stories: Young women who loved their dogs and started out brewing small batches on their stovetop that are now selling cases. There's actually a very good reason for going to the trouble to make a beer especially for your dog. The general consensus is that alcoholic beverages designed for humans aren't good for a dog's digestive track, and their smaller size makes them highly prone to alcohol poisoning. However, dogs love the grain flavors in beer.

Driving Emoticons

photo_blog_Driv-e-mocion.jpg

Gizmodiva.com: In this day and age, smileys and emoticons play a vital part in our messaging or email lingo! I can’t complete a simple message or mail without the use of these shortcuts to exhibit my thoughts. And here comes the Drivemocion, one more mode to illustrate my inner thoughts. I think at some point in life, all of us have been in traffic and had the urge to communicate something good or bad to the people driving behind us. Using a certain finger to indicate feeling is so downgrading where as Drivemocion is a more geeky approach. It is a small electronic display that can be attached to the back window and allows any kind of message (2, 3 or 5 preprogrammed message versions) to be displayed. Its circular rear display can show smiley faces, frown faces, "Thanks," and "Back Off." This battery powered, suction cup mounted rear window display comes with a wireless controller for you to use inside. This illuminating car message sign can be used to communicate both day and night.

The facilities offered clean, deluxe bathrooms, baby changing stations, stroller parking, seating areas, and of course lots of luxury toilet paper. Cleanliness was guaranteed by the presence of one bathroom attendant for every two stalls, cleaning after each use. Close to 430,000 people made use of the service.

With the mass popularity of Project Runway, we’re surprised MySpace U.S. still hasn’t created a Fashion category (MySpace France recently launched MySpace Boudoir), but finally there now is a social network, called IQONS, devoted specifically to the fashion industry.

Cellblock

CellBlock: Every minute of the day, countless millions of people walk around photo_blog_cellblock.jpgwith camera phones in their pockets. The photo quality and phone networks improve daily. Yet relatively few people use their cell phone camera feature because, until now, there hasn't been much reason to.

Cellblock is changing all that, in a big way. When a member starts a cellblock album, the album is assigned its own unique email address. At that point, anyone with the email address can contribute mobile photos and video to the cellblock using their camera phone, instantly, from anywhere. They don’t even have to be registered. The cellblock player can be embedded in any website, so the world can watch in real time as photos and video arrive.

Worried about inappropriate material getting onscreen? Cellblock lets you easily control and monitor what gets into your shows. Only want to let select people see it? Cellblock provides password protection.

With Cellblock, everyone with a cell phone camera or computer is a potential contributor, no special software required! It's a simple but powerful idea, and it's free. Just imagine the possibilities!

Spout

Janice alerted us to a new online film community Spout.com:

photo_blog_spout_logo.jpgThe DVD market is, and has been, in constant flux since the talk of video streaming, Netflix and others. In tandem, community sites like MySpace and Friendster are changing the way we interact with the Internet, particularly among teens who are avid users of these sites. At the crossroads of this is Spout (www.spout.com), the first online community focused on connecting film lovers with great films and the people who have something to say about them. Likened to a MySpace for film buffs, the site hosts advanced technology to push community servers to new limits – providing a better user experience for discussing, organizing and buying all kinds of films.

Spout members search for, organize, recommend and buy their favorite films, as well as interact with each other via an agile and easy-to-use online interface. Personalized film tags like “profound,” “guilty-pleasure” or “cops” replace typical genre labels like “romance” or “adventure,” further personalizing the search for films, while extensive integration of the tools connects films and people in all kinds of relevant ways. People are connected not just based on movie purchases or searches, but by their personal profile, which grows and changes each time they visit the site.

Spout was founded by CEO Rick DeVos and three other passionate Web innovators and filmmakers who had an idea to create a human Web experience that was a trusted place between the multiplex and the film festival where fans can gather to find, enjoy and discuss films. While current competitors offer computer-generated recommendations, spout.com uses real people—experts or mavens—to help consumers sort through the thousands of films they could choose. Ultimately Spout will serve as a distribution network for filmmakers looking fro a way to be heard.

Around three million people in the UK suffer with diabetes and need to maintain healthy blood glucose levels, limiting the onset of long-term, debilitating complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, coma, amputations, blindness and impotence. t+ medical has pioneered a way to help people take control of long term conditions by turning a mobile phone into a personal healthcare management system.

The t+ diabetes system gives people instant personal feedback, helping them to spot day-to-day fluctuations that can have a devastating long term impact. The data is also transmitted to a website for detailed analysis and remote monitoring by a nominated healthcare professional and the t+ Specialist Nurse.
